Best Things To Do In Panaji, Goa in India

Goa is world-renowned for its pristine beaches and nightlife and one of the popular tourist destinations among domestic and international travelers. However, most people skip the state capital Panaji (also known as Panjim) in pursuit of North Goa’s nightlife and South Goa’s beaches. Did you know that Panaji has a reminiscent of 400 years of Portuguese influence UNESCO site and plenty of other cultural & spiritual attractions to explore?

Based on my recent trip, I’ve listed a few of the must-see and do things in Panaji that you shouldn’t miss during your Goa trip!

1) Visit Immaculate Conception Church

The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is one of the iconic landmarks in Panaji located on Church Square. Its classic white Baroque architecture with a blend of Portuguese flavors and tinge of Goan touch is a delight for any architectural lover.  This massive architecture has zig-zag staircases leading to the prayer hall at the top. The top area of the church is also referred to as a crown of Panaji.  Ensure to spend some time at the church and soak the vibe of old Goa.

Immaculate Conception Church is also an incredible spot for taking some memorable pictures during your trip. Wear the flowy maxi dresses in the shades of blue and the color will pop up in your pictures. Even my white dress blends perfectly with the backdrop.

2) Stroll around Fontainhas

Fontainhas is a Latin Quarter and UNESCO heritage site. The colorful historic neighborhood gives a glimpse of the Portuguese colonial period in Goa. From the narrow winding lanes to overhanging bougainvillea from wooden balconies to fluorescents & pastel houses, all together makes you feel that you’re walking in the Latin Quarter of New Orleans.

The best way to explore Fontainhas is on foot. Walking on the cobbled street will definitely transport you back in time. You can also join any heritage walk organized by locals.

3) Visit St Sebastian’s Chapel

The 19th century Chapel of St. Sebastian is the most pristine attraction in Fontainhas apart from the colorful houses. While stepping inside the chapel, you’ll find a statue of the Virgin Mary, three resplendent altarpieces, and a crucifix. One of the unique things about the crucifix is that the figure of Christ has wide-open eyes.

While strolling around Immaculate Conception Church and Fontainhas, you’ll come across many quirky murals, giant caricatures and colorful stairs. Spend some time and don’t forget to take plenty of pictures!
